DEBATE THE FACTS: African cheetahs introduced into India

This week’s conservation article covers a topic that has triggered anger and ridicule from many circles. Some suggest that personal interests have overridden scientific rigour; that this is a glorified pet zoo project.

The high mortality rates of the introduced cheetahs have been a bone of contention, especially because they have occurred mostly in small fenced pre-release areas; a topic that deserves a high degree of attention and transparency. Comparing the cheetah mortality rates and causes with comparable African populations is essential to understand the many layers and challenges this project faces.

To add to the spice and rumour-mongering, a government instruction to introduce Asiatic lions to the same park has been ignored, while these African cheetahs were introduced instead.

As you know, I favour debating the facts rather than arguing ideologies. Read our article below, share it with your network, and let’s do that.

Keep the passion

African safari

Imagine diving into the Indian Ocean and discovering a 5,000-year-old forest beneath the waves. New research has revealed ancient peat reefs off Mozambique, formed when rising seas submerged coastal forests and wetlands. Despite having no living coral, these reefs shelter an extraordinary variety of marine life, including lobsters, oysters and young fish. Scientists are also investigating their potential as carbon stores. So, next time someone suggests a beach holiday is just about lying on the sand, remind them there’s a whole ancient world to explore beneath the surface. Better still, head to the Bazaruto Archipelago and see what all the fuss is about.

Also this week, we help families work out when to go on safari, balancing wildlife sightings, school holidays, weather and the best experiences for children. And four years after African cheetahs were first released in India, we take a closer look at Project Cheetah – its successes, setbacks and the big question of whether the reintroduction is actually working.

OUR SAFARI GUESTS SAY…

AG safari guests Gurvin and family, from Singapore, went on an unforgettable family safari to Kenya.

A shout-out to Christian Boix! “From the planning to the overall experience, everything came together beautifully, and we honestly couldn’t have asked for a better family adventure. Our time in the Maasai Mara was absolutely incredible. Tor’s Camp was such a special place to stay, and we were fortunate enough to see so many amazing animals during our game drives…

What made this trip particularly special was not just the incredible wildlife and beautiful landscapes, but also the people who made us feel so welcome at every stop. The wonderful teams at both Tor’s Camp and El Karama, together with Fred and John, really made the experience what it was. Their friendliness, hospitality and genuine care for our family turned an amazing safari into something truly memorable.”
