How many leopards can we afford to lose?

From our Editor – Taryn van Jaarsveld

Even leopards have their preferred dinner hours. But did you know that human activity plays a bigger role in shaping when leopards are active than many environmental factors? According to research from Kruger National Park, leopards adjust their activity around human presence, including roads, vehicles and other disturbances, often favouring quieter hours when encounters with people are less likely. Moonlight also influences their movements. For these famously elusive cats, choosing when to venture out may be just as important as choosing where to go.
And speaking of human influences on leopards, how many can South Africa justify hunting when we still struggle to establish how many there are? Our latest story takes a hard look at the science behind the country’s leopard hunting quotas, the uncertainty surrounding population estimates and whether the authorities are genuinely responding to the evidence. When the consequences are irreversible, surely the burden of proof should fall on those issuing the permits?
And for a change of scenery, we head to Victoria Falls. When is the best time to visit? It depends on what you want to experience – the thunderous spectacle of peak water flow, clearer views of the falls, or the thrill of activities like white-water rafting and Devil’s Pool. Our guide helps you choose the right time for your visit.

OUR SAFARI GUESTS SAY…
AG safari guests Steve, Deborah, Carol and Susan from Australia enjoyed an incredible 23-day safari to East Africa. They began deep in the heart of the Great Rift Valley, stayed at the base of Mt. Meru in Arusha NP, and then headed to the eastern plains and the Kogatende region of the Serengeti. They concluded their safari exploring the shores of Lake Tanganyika and went trekking to find Gombe’s world-renowned chimpanzees.
22-night adventure. “Planning this trip with Christian was a great experience; he was very patient and professional as we worked through options before finalising our 22-night adventure. From there, the trip was seamless, with so many amazing experiences… including the Rift Valley, colobus and blue monkeys, amazing birds, Serengeti big and small cats and so much more, and chimpanzee trekking in the footsteps of Jane Goodall… All the logistics for internal flights, road transfers and any overnight stays between camps were managed by AG, making our lives easy. We highly recommend Christian and AG.”
