Having discarded his backpack for a mountain bike about a decade ago, travel writer David Bristow dreamt up the idea of riding his bike from Beit Bridge to Cape Town, South Africa.
In doing so he created one of the country’s premier mountain bike trails, ‘akin to the American Great Divide trail (only much better)’ he says. But Bristow also wrote a book – Ride the Spine of the Dragon – which will be launched on Friday 5th October at Pampoenkraal, on the Altydgedacht wine farm in Durbanville.

According to Bristow, ‘the book launch will be a huge opskop, complete with a three-course dinner and wine followed by dance-till-you-drop music’. All funds raised from this dinner will be shared equally between two great causes: Save The Rhino Fund and Operation Smile.
There will be prizes on offer too, limited to the first 150 people who place their bookings to the celebration dinner. For R300 a ticket you stand the chance to win a bush safari for two and a cycling holiday for two. There will also be one very unusual and collectable bike on auction, but you’ll have to wait till then to see what it is.
