Everything you need to know about Tanzania

Tanzania hosts many incredible safari destinations. Here are some of the top destinations to include in your Tanzania safari:

Best places to visit during your safari in Tanzania

  • Serengeti National Park: Famous for the Great Wildebeest Migration and abundant predators

  • Ngorongoro Crater: The iconic Ngorongoro Crater - the largest intact volcano caldera in the world - is home to extraordinary biodiversity including the Big 5

  • Tarangire National Park: Known for its elephant herds and baobab trees

  • Selous Game Reserve: A remote and wild area ideal for off-the-beaten-path safaris

  • Zanzibar, Pemba & Mafia Islands: The Spice Islands - Zanzibar (Unguja), Pemba, Mafia and a host of smaller associated islands serve as beach retreats and watersports havens. Perfect for post-safari relaxation with its turquoise waters and white sand beaches

  • Mahale Mountains National Park: Craggy mountains, rolling hills, and verdant forests that offer some of the best chimpanzee trekking in Africa

Best time to visit Tanzania

The best time depends on your safari goals, whether you want to see the Great Migration or predator sightings, enjoy the abundant bird life, trek for chimpanzees or avoid the crowds. The dry season (June to October) is ideal for wildlife viewing, while the wet season (November to May) brings lush landscapes and excellent birdwatching. A detailed breakdown:

  • January to March: Short dry season. The Southern Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater are excellent in the calving season, which attracts predators.

  • April to May: Long rainy season. Some areas become inaccessible, but this is the greenest time of year with fewer tourists.

  • June to August: Dry season. The Great Migration moves through the Western Corridor of the Serengeti. Wildlife congregates around water sources, making sightings easier.

  • September to October: Wildlife viewing peaks, and the Great Migration reaches the Mara River crossings. Cooler temperatures make it a comfortable time to visit.

  • November to December: Short rainy season. Landscapes are lush, and migratory birds arrive. Wildlife is still plentiful, and crowds are fewer.
