Africa Geographic has been named Africa’s Leading Luxury Safari Company 2026 at the World Travel Awards – recognition of more than 35 years spent exploring Africa, telling its stories and creating exceptional safaris across the continent. The award was presented at the World Travel Awards Africa Gala Ceremony in Zanzibar on 28 August 2026, where travel and tourism organisations from across the continent gathered at Diamonds Bijoux for the annual ceremony.
And we were in formidable company. The nominees for Africa’s Leading Luxury Safari Company included &Beyond, Abercrombie & Kent, African Bush Camps, Singita and Wilderness – brands that have helped shape luxury safari travel in Africa. For teamAG, that makes this award particularly special. But it also raises an important question: what does being Africa’s Leading Luxury Safari Company actually mean for someone planning a safari?

What makes a luxury African safari?
For us, luxury has never simply meant choosing the most expensive lodge. An extraordinary African safari comes down to being in the right place, at the right time, with the right people.
It might mean being the only group watching elephants cross a floodplain in Botswana’s Okavango Delta with an expert guide who understands their behaviour. It could be choosing a quieter part of the Serengeti during peak season rather than following the crowds. Or it could be going totally off the beaten track and coming face to face with lowland gorillas in Odzala-Kokoua National Park. Or it might mean spending several unhurried days in one wilderness area instead of racing between destinations.
Yes, excellent accommodation is an important part of a luxury safari. So are good food, thoughtful service, privacy and comfort. But the real luxury is access, time, knowledge and experience. That philosophy shapes the safaris we craft and manage.

How was this award decided?
The World Travel Awards are decided through voting by travellers and travel-industry professionals, with verified travel-industry votes carrying additional weighting. For us, that recognition reflects the trust travellers and industry partners place in Africa Geographic to deliver exceptional luxury African safari experiences.
We know Africa on the ground
Africa Geographic has been immersed in African travel, wildlife and conservation since 1991. Our safari experts live and work in Africa. They travel extensively, inspect properties, follow changes in destinations and maintain relationships with guides, camps, lodges and operators across the continent.
Safari conditions are constantly changing. Water levels affect experiences in the Okavango Delta. Wildlife movements influence where to stay in the Serengeti. Private concessions can offer very different experiences within the same ecosystem. And a lodge that is perfect for one traveller may be completely wrong for another. Our job is not simply to book accommodation, but to understand these differences and use them to build the best safaris for our guests.

Every safari is made for the traveller
There is no single “best African safari”. A first-time safari traveller hoping to see the Big Five needs something very different from an experienced safari-goer looking for rare species, cultural encounters, or remote wilderness.
Families have different priorities from photographers; solo travellers from honeymooners. Some guests want exceptional wildlife viewing from morning until evening. Others want to combine their safari with gorilla trekking, cultural experiences, beaches or time immersed in an extraordinary lodge. So our safari experts always start by understanding what our guests want to experience, when they want to travel, and what matters most to them – and build the journey from there.

Wildlife, wilderness and local people come first
Luxury should enhance a safari, not distract from the reason you travelled to Africa. The landscapes, local people, wildlife and wild experiences come first. That is why we think carefully about where our guests spend their time. A spectacular suite cannot compensate for poor guiding, overcrowded sightings or an itinerary built around convenience rather than authenticity. Sometimes the best choice is a polished luxury lodge. Sometimes it is an intimate seasonal tented camp deep in the wilderness. Often it is a carefully considered combination of the two.
We focus on places with excellent guides, access to worthwhile wilderness areas and experiences that reveal something meaningful about where you are.

Responsible safari travel matters
Africa’s wildlife and wild landscapes are not simply products to be consumed. Tourism can provide important income for protected areas, conservation programmes, local businesses and people living alongside wildlife. But those benefits depend on how and where travellers spend their money.
Responsible travel has therefore always been central to Africa Geographic. We favour safari experiences that respect wildlife and wilderness, support good conservation practice and create tangible value for local people. We also believe travellers deserve information to make informed choices about the places they visit. For that reason, our safari business and our conservation publishing are closely connected.
For decades, Africa Geographic has published stories about Africa’s wildlife, conservation challenges, science, destinations and people. That knowledge informs how we travel – and how we plan journeys for our guests.

More than 35 years of African stories and safaris
Africa Geographic did not begin as a conventional travel company. Since 1991, we have published articles about the continent’s wildlife, wild places, conservation, and safari experiences for a global audience. Over time, helping people understand Africa naturally evolved into helping them experience it for themselves.
Today our safari experts create tailor-made journeys across Africa, while the wider team continues to publish independent travel, wildlife, conservation and science articles. The two sides of Africa Geographic strengthen one another: we travel because we care deeply about Africa, and travelling teaches us more about the Africa we write about. What does this award mean for our travellers?
Choosing a safari company can be difficult. Africa is enormous. Safari options can appear bewilderingly similar online, prices vary dramatically and deciding between countries, reserves, seasons, camps and lodges is difficult without first-hand knowledge.
Winning Africa’s Leading Luxury Safari Company 2026 gives travellers another reason to trust Africa Geographic with that decision.
That trust is reinforced by recognition from Condé Nast Traveler, which features Africa Geographic safari experts among its trusted travel specialists. This reflects the depth of first-hand knowledge and on-the-ground experience behind the safaris we create.
These awards place AG among some of the most established names in African safari travel and recognise the approach we have worked hard to develop: deeply informed, carefully planned and individually designed safaris. But an award is only worth something if we keep earning it.
For us, that means continuing to travel, inspect locations and lodges and ask difficult questions. We will continue to promote responsible travel. And we will continue to create African safaris that we would genuinely recommend to our own friends and families.
