São Tomé and Príncipe are two remote islands in the Gulf of Guinea, straddling the equator 200km off the coast of Gabon. Created by volcanic activity millions of years ago, the islands offer outstanding biodiversity, verdant forests, diverse culture, white sand beaches, history and endemic creatures.
Towering volcanic mountain slopes are blanketed with extensive rainforest, with peaks often obscured by clinging mist and cloud. The verdant forests are among the most biodiverse on the planet. Príncipe, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is home to several endemic terrestrial and marine species.
Once a thriving outpost occupied by Portuguese settlers, São Tomé and Príncipe were the epicentre of the world's cocoa production in the early 1900s. Today the large cocoa factories have been transformed into beautiful hotels and lodges that host visitors from all over the world seeking a taste of the natural wonder, unique chocolate and island lifestyle of São Tomé and Príncipe.
