Malawi hosts many incredible safari destinations. Here are some of the top destinations to include in your Malawi safari:
Best places to visit during your safari in Malawi
Lake Malawi: Lake Malawi is the southernmost African Great Lake in the East African Rift system and a popular inland beach destination as a finale to top off that wildlife safari
Liwonde National Park: Liwonde National Park is a protected area on the banks of the Shire River. This is a great comeback story - how a wildlife safari haven was reclaimed from a poached wasteland, under the expert guidance of African Parks
Majete Wildlife Reserve: This is one of Africa’s greatest conservation success stories under the expert management of African Parks and a premier Big-5 safari destination for authentic safaris
Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve: Malawi’s oldest and biggest protected area - a true wilderness stretching from the Great Rift Valley escarpment to just five kilometres short of the shoreline of Lake Malawi
The dry season (May to October) is ideal for wildlife viewing and lake activities. The rainy season (November to April) is lush and green, with excellent birdwatching. A detailed breakdown:
January to March: The rainy season is at its peak. Lake Malawi’s surroundings are vibrant, but wildlife can be harder to spot.
April to May: The rains taper off, and the landscape is lush. This shoulder season offers a mix of good wildlife sightings and fewer crowds.
June to August: The dry season. Cooler temperatures and clear skies make this the best time for safaris and water activities on Lake Malawi.
September to October: Temperatures rise, and wildlife congregates around water sources. This is also an excellent time for snorkelling and diving.
November to December: Early rains transform the landscape, and the birdwatching season begins. It’s also a great time for spotting newborn animals
