Kahuzi-Biega National Park straddles the Albertine Rift and Congo Basin, protecting both Afro-montane and lowland rainforest and many species living there - including the rare eastern lowland gorilla Gorilla berengei graueri.
The park has a greater diversity of mammal species than any other national park in the Albertine Rift. Extending over 600,000 ha near Rwanda and the western bank of Lake Kivu, Kahuzi-Biega straddles two volcanic mountains - Mounts Kahuzi (3,308 m) and Biega (2,790 m)
