Hwange – Zimbabwe’s oldest and largest national park – is situated on the fringes of the Kalahari Desert in the northwestern corner of Zimbabwe, bordering Botswana.
The 14,651km2 (1.46 million hectares) unfenced park is part of the greater Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area that centres around the confluence of the Zambezi and Chobe Rivers and includes protected areas of Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Angola.
Once a royal hunting area for Mzilikazi, the Mthwakazi king, Hwange’s shallow soils and scarce water resources made it unsuitable for agriculture. With the addition of artificial water points fed by boreholes, animal populations have flourished and Hwange has become a major safari destination
