A senior wildlife warden in Maun is in custody for allegedly breaking into a store room at his work place and stealing three rhino horns worth 3 million Botswana Pula.
Last week, State Prosecutor Carlos Barayang Diundu pleaded with Magistrate Clifford Foroma to remand Gilbert Monnaalesole, 44, in prison since investigations into the matter were still on-going.
He told court that the stolen horns have not been recovered.
The accused was not asked to plead and he did not object to being locked up.
When asked if he had anything to say, the senior wildlife warden said: “I don’t object to being remanded. I want to give them ample time to do their investigations well without disturbance.”
He further told the magistrate court that he was surprised at the charges put before him.
“I am the keeper of the keys to the storeroom so why would I break into it, that would be surprising indeed,” he said.
