The World Rhino Day fun walk took place on Saturday, 19th September as an early celebration of World Rhino Day on 22nd September. The aim of the walk was to raise much needed funds for the anti-poaching efforts and the conservation work that is done by the Madikwe Conservation Trust.

Jaci’s Lodges sponsored an entire class of matric students from Molatedi village to take part in the fun walk. Our guides departed early to collect the learners from the village then enjoyed a game drive to the starting point of the walk.

There was a festive spirit as participants from all corners of the reserve – guests from lodges, reserve personnel, adults and children alike – all got excited about the prospect of participating in the first rhino walk in Madikwe Game Reserve.

After a short welcome speech and a safety briefing, the walkers were off on the 5km fun walk through the reserve.

Water points every 500 metres ensured that no one got dehydrated in the scorching hot weather, and sweep vehicles were on hand to assist participants who were struggling. Young and old, everyone was united in raising awareness of the rhino poaching crisis as well as much needed funds for anti-poaching efforts in Madikwe Game Reserve.

Brightly painted banners at the start and finish highlighted the rhino poaching statistics and white crosses reminded walkers of the stark reality of the numbers of rhino that have fallen victim to painful, heartless and fatal poaching methods.

At the finish walkers were greeted by several banners and stalls manned by various Madikwe lodges, as well as the magnificent painted rhino. All in all it was a fun and worthwhile day

We are looking forward to being involved in this event next year and wish to congratulate Carlien and her team for organising this year’s walk.  In total there were about 250 participants and around ZAR64,000 was raised to help anti-poaching initiatives.
