Following a call at lunchtime on Tuesday, 16 February 2016, Elephants Alive did everything that they could to save an elephant calf that had become trapped in a dam at Phalaborwa Copper in South Africa’s Limpopo region.

You can watch the video of the baby’s rescue here:

However, in spite of everyone’s best efforts, the team at Elephants Alive has some sad news that they’ve recently shared on their Facebook page:

“It’s with a heavy heart that we have to let you know that dear little Amanzi passed away on the afternoon of Wednesday, 2nd March.

“It is with great sadness that we say farewell to this beautiful baby elephant. As many of you know he has touched everyone who has come to hear of him and his story, and we thank everyone for all the support and love given to help this calf.

“Thank you to everyone for your complete dedication given to Amanzi’s care and comfort, to the vet Peter Rogers and his team for your experience, constant watch, care and attention, and to every single person who has donated towards his formula and who has been supporting Amanzi every step of the way.

“This is a sad week during which we have lost two beautiful elephant spirits – one big and one small.”
