A 10-year-old girl has died after being attacked by a lion outside her home in the Chiredzi district near Gonarezhou National Park in south-eastern Zimbabwe.

The incident occurred late at night when the girl, Mitchell Mucheni, went outside to relieve herself around the back of the house.

Her aunt, Mawonei Muchacha, became concerned when her niece didn’t return and went to investigate, only to discover a lion dragging Mucheni’s body away.

According to the state-run Chronicle, after calling a neighbour for help, Muchacha used a torch to follow the trail of blood for about 300 metres until finding the girl’s body.

Police spokesperson, Kudakwashe Dehwa, said that the incident occurred on Saturday night and was reported to the Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks).

“We have received a report of sudden death. A lion killed a 10-year-old girl from Chiredzi. The girl has gone behind their house during the night to relieve herself when she met her fate. She was allegedly attacked and her body dragged for 300m before the lion disappeared,” Dehwa said.
