Botswana elephant hunting hit by Coronavirus

Botswana’s first full elephant hunting season since 2014 has been dealt a considerable blow because hunters have either cancelled or postponed hunts due to Coronavirus and related travel bans. The Botswana Wildlife Producers Association has requested an extension of the hunting season, which usually runs from April to September. “Everything is at a standstill. All clients that were supposed to come in have either postponed or cancelled,” said Clive Eaton, owner of Tholo Safaris, a hunting company that last month bought licences to hunt 20 elephants. Read more: Aljazeera

Coronavirus could threaten the great apes

Research on great apes has shown that they are susceptible to infection from human respiratory viruses. The ‘common cold’, also a coronavirus, is known to infect gorillas and chimpanzees. COVID-19 could potentially be harmful to endangered great apes like mountain, lowland and Cross River gorillas and chimpanzees in Africa, as well as for orangutans in Asia. Malawi bans bushmeat industry

Malawi’s Department of Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) has banned the selling and consumption of bushmeat due to concerns about the Coronavirus. DNP director Bright Kumchedwa said that the consumption of bushmeat carried significant health risks and that poaching and trading of bushmeat are now considered serious offences.
