Lions are one of the most iconic species of Africa and are part of the elite Big Five. In Africa, lion numbers are greatly declining but conservationists are hard at work to keep these magnificent big cats alive. In South Africa, the majority of our lions are found in Kruger National Park and Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. These large wildlife reserves support lion populations that are stable and viable, but one third of South Africa’s lions are found in smaller parks. For a long time, lions in smaller parks were not included in the bigger lion conservation picture, but new and important efforts have been put in place to manage these cats as one population. Bertus visits Madikwe Game Reserve to see this super predator in action and to discover how they are conserving this amazing cat for the future.

Elephant interview with Dr. Sam Ferreira

On 30th December 2013, a bull elephant flipped over a tourist’s car in the Kruger National Park in a very aggressive attack that was fortunately survived by the two passengers although the woman was severely injured. After addressing the incident, Kruger National Park management chose to shoot the elephant. After another tourist’s video of the incident went viral on the internet, opinions and comments ran rife. There was much debate over whether the unfortunate tourists had done something wrong, whether Kruger management should have shot the elephant and whether the whole situation had been avoidable. We get the inside story from SANPark’s large mammal ecologist, Dr Sam Ferreira, and discuss the real facts and what tourists should do if faced with a similar situation in the future.
