Sundowners are a time-honoured tradition on safari. Nothing beats an ice-cold G&T while watching the glorious African sunset after a game drive. With landscapes ranging from desert plains to delta, Botswana is a land of abundant wildlife and the most spectacular sunsets.

Whether witnessing the sun create magical reflections over the Okavango Delta as it slowly dips below the horizon, or watching the land turn to blazing orange as the sun sets over the Kalahari Desert, there is a unique beauty to it all.

While it’s hard to say which spots have the ‘best’ sunsets (as they are all so diverse), Journeys Discovering Africa has found a few spots over the years that are really special. Be warned, these photos may make you thirsty for a sundowner!

1. Chobe Game Lodge, Chobe National Park

“With the storm clouds building in the late afternoons, we are being treated to the most spectacular sunsets. Like this one on the Chobe floodplains.”

2. Khwai Tented Camp, Okavango Delta

“Besides the day-time drives, which can feature Africa’s big attractions – lion, cheetah, leopard, wild dog, elephant, buffalo, hippo and giraffe – guests at Khwai Tented Camp are able to explore nature after sunset with a night drive.”

“Tell us, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

4. Savute Safari Lodge, Chobe National Park

“I took this with the camera on a tripod as the sun had gone below the horizon and there wasn’t much light. Standing on the deck we could hear the elephants rumbling as they hung around at the waterhole.”

5. Pelo Camp, Okavango Delta

“Serene mokoro rides at sunset.”

Tempted for that sundowner yet? As they say, it’s always 5 o’clock somewhere! To enjoy a tailor-made trip to Botswana, complete with great sundowners, take a look at Journeys Discovering Africa’s tour options here.
