Klaserie Sands River Camp

Written by: Derek Solomon for Best of Africa

Elephants are regular visitors to the waterhole in front of the main complex at the main camp in Mashatu Game Reserve in Botswana. But there aren’t always sightings as special as this one!

A small herd of elephants, including two young calves, came down to the water to have a drink. The older calf was keen to explore the area around the waterhole while the adults quenched their thirst.

In the midst of its explorations, suddenly the little one slipped off the muddy edge of the bank, falling right into the water. Luckily its mother immediately took action, stepping to the water’s edge and carefully helping her clumsy calf up the bank with her trunk.
