Grab your running shoes and stretch out that hamstring in preparation for the 2017 Econet Victoria Falls Marathon.
Taking place in beautiful Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, the race sprints into its 12th year in 2017 and will be looking to grow from the 2500 participants that attended the race last year. Wild Frontiers and Adventure Zone are the proud organisers of this prestigious race in the adventure capital of Africa, but what is it all about?
Held this year on the 18th of June, participants are treated to one of the world’s most scenic marathon routes as the race crosses the Victoria Falls bridge, winds its way through the very wild Zambezi National Park and criss-crosses through the leafy suburbs of the tourist town of Victoria Falls. Locals come out in their numbers to run and support, turning the town into a bustling centre of marathon excitement. A 42.2 km, 21.1 km and 7.5 km fun run are available and ensure there’s a race distance for everyone.
For The Adrenaline Junkie
Victoria Falls is a delightful town on the Zimbabwean side of the Zambezi and is rightfully known as the adventure capital of Southern Africa. Bungee jumping, the zipline and the Gorge Swing are popular choices for those looking for a rush as they plummet into Batoka Gorge, while below eager paddlers put on their life jackets and prepare for Grade 5 white river rafting in what is widely considered the best one day rafting trip in the world. Hold onto your paddles as you crash through the aptly named Creamy White Buttocks, avoid the standing wave of The Washing Machine or ramp the Devil’s Toilet Bowl on this fantastic half or full day rafting experience.
For The More Relaxed Traveller
Victoria Falls has long been Zimbabwe’s tourism hub and as such has a range of luxury accommodation and activities to match. Test out your driver on the 18 hole golf course at Elephant Hills, get a spa treatment at any of the luxury resorts in the area or board a sunset cruise on the Upper Zambezi to see elephants, hippos and crocodiles all whilst sipping on a cold Zambezi Lager. All drinks and snacks are provided on the sunset cruise and it is a spectacular way to end your marathon day.
Maybe you’re not looking to leap off something or just get pampered all day, but still want to keep busy. Not to worry, there’s plenty to do. Visit Victoria Falls town and see the Victoria Falls in all its splendour, shop ‘til you drop at the many shops and markets in the town or polish off a cocktail or expertly prepared meal at one of the many restaurants in the area. Keep a day aside for a spot of fishing or canoeing on the Upper Zambezi or visit the nearby Zambezi National Park or Hwange National Park for a game drive. There’s really something for everyone in Victoria Falls!
