Only 20km from the Orpen Gate of world renowned Kruger National Park, tucked out of sight of the average tourist, is a simple rural village. Sigagule is a small quiet village of around 5,000 people, where life is still simple and relaxed. Cattle walk in dusty roads as kids peep out from behind walls with little smiles of excitement as they see visitors walking by.
Chickens cluck in the mielie fields, and elders sit under trees watching the time go by. This village, Sigagule, is the central point of Shik Shack Tours. We offer walking tours, bicycle tours, traditional meals and even a donkey cart tour with the local village transport man, Isaac. With us you can see life in rural Africa today – not planned and rehearsed. This is not a show. What we show you is life.
Our guides, Prince and Mpho, were both born, grew up, and still live in Sigagule village. We hope as you walk along, that you will see the beauty in the little things. Be the wide eyed traveller and indulge your travel wanderlust as you walk, see, taste, and smell.
We are all about social integration and an amazing grassroots inspired African experience. Greet the “Induna”of the village, taste fermented local beer, learn from a traditional healer, or be a foodie and enjoy “pap” and “marog” whilst being entranced by traditional dancing. We offer under-the-stars camping, with solar showers, and composting loos – for those that want a real tangible experience.
A percentage of each tour fee goes back to local charity, Nourish, whose community library and food security garden is the starting point of each tour. Funds generated go towards maintaining the garden, run by grannies from the village for their own use. The rest of the money goes to the medicine man, the cooks, the school, and all the little stops along your tour, so that your experience with us touches not only your heart; but their lives as a sustainable income!
So come let us show you the little things, and fall in love with Africa. Enjoy your time with us, be real – be local – be inspired!
WARNING: if you worry about dusty toes, or where to plug in your hair straightener, then this is not for you. Experience true Africa!
