Travel like a local with VoiceMap

People say that travelling with a local is always best – they know the happening restaurants, the hole-in-the-wall coffee stops, where to find a good deal and where and what is trendy. But imagine having a local in your pocket, in any city in the world at any time you want them? Well that is what VoiceMap is.

VoiceMap gives anyone the opportunity to share their neighbourhood with the world and travellers the opportunity to enjoy cities through the eyes of a local.

VoiceMap is a smartphone app that features guided voice tours to take you around the world. You can enjoy a personal tour of Cape Town’s Bo-Kaap with a local tour guide, discover Joburg’s street art scene with a resident graffiti artist or meander the streets of Tunis with a townsman.

VoiceMap is the brain child of Capetonians Lauren Edwards and Iain Manley and I was lucky enough to join them on two walks in my own backyard. One was a journey along the Mouille Point Promenade, as Sea Point resident and travel writer Justin Fox opened my eyes to the shipwrecks and stories of the coast while the other took me into my own neighbourhood of Muizenberg to discover places I never even knew existed.

The great thing about the VoiceMap app is that it uses your location to play commentary so you can leave your phone in your pocket and pop into a coffee shop or a shop along the way and the app will only play again when you are back on the route – allowing you to explore at your own pace.

I am the first to confess that I have been bitten by the travel bug… badly. I am a lover of all things travel from basic tenting with creepy crawlies to lazing in luxury lodges; I will give it all a go. I am passionate about wildlife and conservation and come from a long line of biologists, researchers and botanists.
