Boutique Safari is one of the few companies that offer bird watching safaris with expert and specially trained bird safari guides. The company founder and proud Maasai warrior, Abby Olemisiko, leads most of our bird safaris. Born in a village near Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater, Abby grew up with a passion for birds. He only needs to hear a bird call or see it fly for a few seconds to be able to identify the species.
Tanzania has some particularly outstanding national parks filled with prolific birdlife, particularly in the north. Here are Abby’s three favourite places to see birds in Tanzania:
- One of the best starting points for bird safaris is Lake Manyara National Park – a bird-watching paradise with over 400 species recorded. Here are a few species that you might be lucky enough to spot:
2. Tanzania’s famous Ngorongoro Crater is also a ‘must-see’ destination for bird-lovers – famous for its crowned cranes, kori bustards, secretary birds and ostriches. It’s common to see all of Africa’s largest birds in a single day! The crater is also known for its raptors including kites, tawny eagles and bateleur eagles.
3. Finally we explore the outstanding array of birds in Serengeti National Park. Over 500 species are found here in Africa’s Garden of Eden. From lilac-breasted rollers, to bee-eaters and snake eagles the Serengeti is filled with flying creatures.
If you are incredibly lucky, you might even witness the birds in action. In a recent bird safari in the Serengeti, Abby watched this brown-snake eagle catch a black cobra. After a massive struggle the eagle eventually flew off with a hard earned meal.
