Sean Metelerkamp (born in Knysna, South Africa) works mostly on autonomous photo and video projects. He was the director of the Die Antwoord’s Zef Side music video for which he won multiple international awards. Currently Sean is one of three photographers exploring modern South African culture in a photographic blog called Twenty Journey.
The street photographer is a curious beast, sometimes working secretly to capture the image of a person in a candid moment, sometimes immersing themselves in unfamiliar territory to reveal the nature of people that the viewer seldom encounters. Their methods are often a mystery – sometimes there is no methods at all, just patience; a sensitivity for the human condition or an ability to hold up a mirror to all of us.
As Africa Geographic Photographer of the Year Competition comes to an end, with photo submissions closing on 30 April 2015, Sean Metelerkamp gives us some final inspiration with his street photography:
In the words of Sean Metelerkamp:
“the criminal and the street photographer
walk similar paths.
suffering in the nothingness
tools in hand
eyes scan furiously
for an opportunity
waiting for the right moment to strike
us and them.”
