Klaserie Sands River Camp

This post is coming to you from South Africa’s easternmost point. Well, not exactly, we’re a few sand dunes away to be precise. Hemmed in by Mozambique to the north and the Indian Ocean to the east, Kosi Bay is a pristine piece of wilderness, tucked away in a wild and far-flung corner of the country. Over the next few months, places like Kosi Bay will be the waypoints of our journey, as we drive in a big clockwise loop around the edge of South Africa.

We’ve been scheming about doing something like this for years, but the opportunity has never really presented itself. Up till now that is. After getting married at the end of last year, we finally have the perfect excuse: our honeymoon!

The seed was planted after reading The Marginal Safari by Justin Fox. He undertook a similar journey several years ago, and documented his adventure so beautifully we knew that at some point before we died, it was something that we would have to do too.

A few days ago, we left Kerryn’s folks’ house in Skukuza, in a southerly direction. In two to three months time (basically as long as we can stretch our funds), we’ll return to Skukuza from the north, hopefully with a whole new perspective on this incredible country we call home. Though it won’t always be possible, the rough idea is to spend more time in the remote places along our country’s borders – the game parks and nature reserves, and the towns and villages a little way off the beaten path.

We’ll be writing about the places we visit and the people we meet, as well as posting plenty of pictures, here and on Instagram. From past experience, we know how tricky it can be keeping these things up to date while on the road. But we’re going to give it the good old college try.

Till the next post then, here’s to adventures and the open road.

Jeff and Kerryn

Kerryn-lee grew up in the wilds of the Kruger Park, where she developed a love of all things nature. Jeff grew up in the wilds of Jozi’s northern suburbs, where he developed a chronic longing for all things nature. After spending 5 months road-tripping Southern Africa a couple of years back, and then another 5 months backpacking the Indian sub-continent, they've decided it's time to get to know their own country a little better. They're currently traveling the circumference of South Africa for their honeymoon, which presented the perfect excuse to go on another adventure. Read about their travels here, or catch them at passthemap.com or on Instagram (@passthemap, @KERRING_LEE).
