Klaserie Sands River Camp

Watching gorillas in their natural setting is very fascinating. It is an experience that one will never forget in their lifetime. A lot of people travel to Rwanda to watch these majestic and gentle primates. These primates do amazing things that are almost similar to what mankind does. Seeing these gorillas can reaffirm your belief that man evolved from the apes.

You can excuse me, but all I can say is that these are human beasts with fur on their bodies. It is really unbelievable the way they lead their lives as the family is socially set up like that of humans. They are led by the dominant silverback – the male who is responsible for protecting the family, looking for food and also building the shelter for the other gorillas. The female gorillas take care of the young ones.

Many people tend to believe that these primates are violent beasts but this is not the case – these are peaceful and vegetarian animals that only feed on tree leaves and fruits.

Watching gorillas in the wild is not as easy as you may think as you need to be physically fit. You will have to hike through enchanting bamboo-forested volcanic ranges to find these gorillas. It can take between 2-8 hours to find a particular family of gorillas. These gorillas are nomads as they keep on moving from one place to another. When tracking them you have to follow their footprints to find them.

Although it’s challenging to track the mountain gorillas in Africa, it’s very adventurous as you move through the bamboo forest in the Virunga region. Your eyes are rewarded with seeing different species of monkeys, trees, vines and birds while your guide provides interesting commentary about the gorillas and other wildlife in Virunga.

It must be noted that you are given one hour to spend with the gorillas but it is an unforgettable moment in life as you interact with the gorillas and take photos of them.

As an extra activity you can go golden monkey tracking at the base of Volcanoes National Park. These are unique monkeys with a golden colour on their back. Who does not love gold? Golden monkey tracking always gives one an extended feeling of excitement after gorilla trekking.

Tracking gorillas in the African wilderness is one of the best gifts that you can ever encounter in life. After watching these gorillas you will bridge the gap between you and nature as you will start to love nature and understand the meaning of conserving it. It is a source of relaxation and enjoyment. You will never regret a trip visiting the gorillas in Virunga region in Africa.
