While returning to camp, guide Nicky Firer and her guests were lucky enough to have front-row seats to an extraordinary lion kill in the Kruger National Park. Says Nicky, “We were winding up our morning game drive when we spotted a pair of lionesses. I could see that they were both looking quite hungry and one lioness seemed to be lactating, so she may well have had cubs hidden somewhere. We followed them for a while, but when they wandered off out of sight, we decided to head on back to camp because it appeared that they were heading away from the road. Just as we were getting ready to move off, I heard a sudden noise from behind the safari vehicle, and I glanced in the rearview mirror just in time to see the lionesses lunging out of the long grass on the side of the road to tackle a kudu they had flushed out of hiding. By the time I had turned the car around, the kill was over, but nevertheless, the guests were awed by what an efficient team the lionesses were and just how quickly they began to feed. We were late for breakfast back at camp, of course, but no one was complaining after what we had just witnessed. A harsh reminder of the realities of nature, and certainly unfortunate for the kudu, but what an experience for the guests to see two top predators in action – quickly and efficiently using their skills to survive.”
