Klaserie Sands River Camp

Our campsite for our first night in Namibia was the Canon Roadhouse near Fish River Canyon. We arrived very late after spending most of the afternoon photographing the sun setting against  beautiful quiver trees.

Driving the long dusty roads at night, with no traffic and only a flicker of light from distant farm houses, you really do get to experience the true nature of an African night. Our arrival at the Canon Roadhouse found us tired and hungry, we hardly even noticed the relics of the motor world scattered around us. The Roadhouse, we discovered the next morning, is a monument to the automotive world, decorated with all kinds of memorabilia dedicated to the vintage car. One can get lost there for hours, the closer you look the more you find.

Driving out towards the Fish River Canyon, we again noticed the variety of old vehicles lying in their final resting place – it made for a great photographic opportunity.

I am a professional field guide with an irrepressible enthusiasm for wildlife photography – a born and bred Zimbabwean, I grew up on a tobacco farm where I was exposed to the great outdoors from a young age. Now with more than 10 years guiding experience across 5 countries, and many hours spent behind a camera, I have realised that photography has the potential to become our greatest conservation tool. I now live in Zululand where I work at Thanda Private Game Reserve and am an active member of Project Rhino KZN – dedicated to the protection of South Africa's rhinos.
