“Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.” ― Norman Vincent Peale

The festive season in Africa’s wilderness is in complete contrast to the scenes we see on Christmas cards. There is no snowfall or cosy Christmas feasts indoors. Instead the season gifts us with long glorious sun-filled days ending with soft, beautiful sunsets complete with drinks in hand and wildlife celebrating life all around. It is a soft, beautiful and magical time in its own way.

Have you ever tried to imagine what a Christmas safari in Africa would be like? Steph from Robin Pope Safaris tells us all about a typical Christmas celebration in Africa:

“I think Christmas at any of the Robin Pope Safaris camps will always be special because we treat our guests like old friends and make them feel ‘right at home’ – and Christmas at the end of the day is about family and friends. We mix together elements of a traditional ‘Western’ Christmas with a local African Christmas twist, making it a unique experience. I think we get that combination just right and all our Christmas guests love the festivities.

We pay a lot of attention to detail, from tasteful Christmas decorations to carolling as well as serving up irresistible Christmas favourites like mince pies and Christmas cake, keeping all our guests in the Christmas spirit and making certain they don’t feel like they are missing out on anything Christmassy.”

Emma Cross from Nkwali Camp in Zambia’s South Luangwa paints a merry-coloured picture of what last Christmas was like in camp.

“It was a hive of activity at Nkwali with Christmas preparations and celebrations accompanied by some fabulous game sightings. All the chefs and their teams were extremely busy in the kitchens stuffing the turkeys, baking mince pies and chocolate brownies, making brandy butter and icing the Christmas cakes. The baboons and monkeys at Nkwali were having a field day trying to sneakily remove the decorations from the Christmas tree on a daily basis, keeping us all on our toes to retrieve missing baubles from around the camp! Father Christmas even paid us a visit, he obviously enjoys the warmer weather here!

The annual Christmas Eve carol singing at Kalwani Pan provided the perfect start to the festivities. Everyone enjoyed listening to the choir and joining in singing some traditional carols, whilst sampling the selection of canapés and sipping champagne. The roasted horse chestnuts also went down a treat!

Over Christmas lunch guests were able to share tales of their exciting Christmas Day morning drives and walks.”

An African wilderness Christmas is a warm and magical affair and we hope to see you in the bush for an African style Christmas this year!
