In recent years the trend to book five star luxury safaris has begun to turn. There has been a distinct break away from opulent lodges and hotels toward a real, old style camping safari experience that allows you to become a part of your surroundings.
In 1836 William Cornwallis Harris led an expedition to observe and record the wildlife and landscapes of Africa. Harris established a safari style that is still used today, starting with rising at first light, an energetic day of walking, an afternoon rest then concluding with a dinner and telling stories in the evening over drinks.
The way we experience safaris today is very similar, but we obviously have 4×4 game drive vehicles now.
Renowned the world over, for its natural habitats and abundance of game, Moremi Game Reserve is the ideal place to go for a camping safari. While in Moremi you are aware of the raw, wild energy that surrounds this place and of the sheer abundance of wildlife that inhabits it.
It is a photographer’s paradise. From exquisite birdlife to majestic lions and elephants, there really is something for everyone.
Game drives in the late afternoons are great to search for nocturnal animals that begin to wake at this time of day. Keep your eyes peeled to spot hyena or lion as they start to hunt.
Dining under the stars is truly one of the most remarkable experiences of your life, bathed in the calls and sounds of the wild; this is paradise. And there is nothing wrong with enjoying that age old tradition of a few gin and tonics.
After swopping stories around your bush TV (the fire) your bed begins to sing its siren song and you will head over to your tent to enjoy the night’s symphony.
As you lie in your tent, the bush a mere 10cm from your head, you will realise just how lucky you are…. Africa like it’s supposed to be experienced.
