The aardwolf isn’t rare but is rarely seen, so the fact that a female has taken up residence at Tuli Safari Lodge, denning close to one of our waterholes and viewing hides, is really special.
Guests have been enjoying regular sightings, including catching a glimpse of her young cubs.
One special encounter was witnessed by recent guests when the aardwolf left the den just as the sun was setting, only to run straight into a pride of lions resting on the other side of the den entrance.
The aardwolf did a quick about-turn and retreated rapidly with its ears pressed flat to its head. Fortunately its panicked sprint enabled it to easily outrun the lions’ somewhat half-hearted chase!
The aardwolf is an insectivore related to hyenas and can eat up to 250,000 termites in a single night.
