Here is the line-up for the South African TV show 50 | 50: Anniversary Season: Episode 15, on 02 December 2013. Learn all about revolutionary mining techniques in Johannesburg, watch as the team goes undercover to expose the illegal sport of bear baiting and review some wonderful books that celebrate Africa.
Johannesburg, a city founded on fields of gold, has seen its mining era come and go, leaving behind a landscape speckled with mine dumps from which dust storms rage and acid water flows. The Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) resulting from ground water that reacts with mine tailings to form acidic water with a cocktail of heavy metals is a contentious environmental issue. Rising underground water levels, which are filling up abandoned mine shafts, is also a serious concern. There is no doubt that AMD poses a significant threat to riverine ecosystems and wetlands into which contaminants may flow. Bonné takes a trip to the West Wits Pit near Krugersdorp to bring us some good news! Here, an abandoned mine shaft has revealed a positive change in the water levels due to extraction pumping by the Department of Water Affairs. She also looks at a revolutionary mining method called closure mining that has been developed to mitigate against AMD. Is there finally some light at the end of the AMD tunnel? Join us to find out!
Living in perpetual fear and in small cages, deprived of food and water, given only the ‘freedom’ of movement a chain attached to the neck allows, and then, tormented by a multitude of vicious dogs for hours on end – this is the life of a brown bear used for a sport called bear baiting. 50|50 investigated this illegal practice in Ukraine and discovered that a large pet food manufacturer, Royal Canin, was sponsoring the prizes for the winning dogs in this illegal sport. We took our hidden cameras to Ukraine to bring you the story. Happily, pressure from the local public is reducing incidents of this barbaric sport and Royal Canin has since made an international apology for their actions and have even committed to establishing a bear sanctuary in the Ukraine. We join international animal welfare organisation, Four Paws, on a secret translocation and rescue of a traumatised bear-baiting victim.
Ntokozo has a wonderful book basket to review with a beautiful selection of books in honour of conservation throughout Africa. From high-flying adventures in Pilot in the Wild by John Bassi, to visual celebrations of majestic landscapes in Africa’s Finest by David Bristow and Colin Bell, this book review will leave you itching to read more. You may have to add these to you Christmas shopping list!
