That amazing mountain that you can almost always see no matter where you are in Cape Town is fiercely loved by all who live under its protection. The locals are very proud of Table Mountain and it is a must-see for all visitors to Cape Town.

7 Wonders

And here are 10 reasons why Ashanti Lodge believes that a trip to Cape Town isn’t complete without going up Table Mountain.

1. The iconic symbol of Cape Town

Everyone knows the shape of Table Mountain and it is used as the logo for Cape Town Tourism and the City of Cape Town.

2. A World Heritage Site

UNESCO has named Table Mountain one of eight World Heritage sites in South Africa. Not many people know this, but Robben Island and Table Mountain are the only two heritage sites in the world that are in visibility of each other.

3. Spectacular views

It goes without saying that the views from the top of the mountain are absolutely spectacular. On a clear day one can see across False Bay to the other side, as well as over our magnificent city. Sunsets are particularly amazing.

4. The cableway

The cableway to the top of the mountain has a chequered history, but since the latest upgrade in 1997 the queues are considerably shorter. Each car takes 65 people so more than 800 people can enjoy the trip every hour.

5. Hiking

What better way to truly experience the natural beauty of the mountain than by walking up it? There are a number of hikes varying in difficulty and you can choose to do it with friends or hire a guide.

6. The floral kingdom

Table Mountain has 2,000 species of fynbos growing on it, which is more than in the whole of the United Kingdom! Fynbos is a type of vegetation characterised by evergreen hard-leaved shrubs and almost no trees.

7. The world’s highest commercial abseil

Being the world’s highest commercial abseil also makes it one of the best.  For any adrenalin junkie there is nothing quite like abseiling down and dangling in mid-air!

8. Dassies

A dassie is a small animal that looks like a rabbit and there are hundreds of them roaming freely around on the mountain. They are quite used to visitors now but it is not advisable to feed them.

9. The best place to send postcards

There is a postbox at the top of Table Mountain and all mail sent from there will be franked with “Table Mountain.” What a great way to tell the world that you were here?

10. One of the new Seven Wonders of the World

In November 2011, Table Mountain was voted as one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. It took three years and millions of people from around the world, but it’s hard to argue with this title once you’ve been here.
