With this in mind, and considering the varying landscapes of Malawi, we decided to research the amount of hashtags for each place to determine the 10 most Instagrammed locations in the warm heart of Africa.

Climbing its way into the top 10, Livingstonia. Sited 900m above Lake Malawi, Livingstonia provides stunning mountain scenery and offers a glimpse into Malawi’s colonial past.
9. Likoma Island
One of two Islands which make up the Likoma District, Likoma Island is situated in the eastern shore of the lake just a few kilometres from Mozambique.
8. Nkhata Bay
Often referred to as the gateway to the islands. Nkhata Bay is becoming increasingly popular amongst tourists and expats.

The first location based in the South of Malawi to feature in our top 10. Liwonde is best known for its proximity to Liwonde National Park. Once inside the park safari-goers can view elephants and antelopes, a boat safari gives the opportunity to see hippos and crocs up close.

Often regarded as Malawi’s friendliest city, Mzuzu is the capital of Malawi’s Northern Region. The area surrounding the city specialises in tea, rubber and most famously, coffee.
5. Cape Maclear
Situated on the southern shore of Malawi, Cape Maclear is said to be the busiest resort on Lake Malawi. The bay provides fantastic views overlooking the islands of Thumbi, Domwe and Mumbo.

Mangochi is a township located near the southern end of Lake Malawi. Mangochi has a number of historical monuments dating back to the beginning of the 20th century.
3. Mount Mulanje
Mulanje Massif is surrounded by the most stunning scenery, many people will stay at the base of the mountain for a day and take it all in. The more adventurous among us will take 2 or 3 days to tackle one of the many trails. The highest peak is Sapitwa (3001m), the highest point in Malawi.

Not only is Blantyre the second most hashtagged location in Malawi, it is the second biggest city in Malawi. Blantyre is a picturesque city and acts as a fantastic hub to explore remote areas such as Mulanje and the Lower Shire Valley.

It may be no surprise that Lilongwe is the most hashtagged location, considering it’s the capital city and most populated in Malawi. Kamuzu Airport, 40 minutes outside of the city, welcomes international visitors. Many will spend at least one night in Lilongwe before exploring the warm heart.
