Africa Geographic Magazine’s goals

Africa Geographic magazine presents the most insightful and valuable content to an audience who want far more than travelogues and wildlife news. It is a means for people to immerse themselves in Africa; a catalyst for foreigners and Africans alike to considerably enhance their experience and knowledge of the continent. Our overall editorial strategy is to celebrate Africa and to educate the world about this great place. We strive to be Africa’s voice.

Topics (for both writing and photography)

We place a premium on unique content that you won’t find on Google and unexpected perspectives that inform and enrich the reader. We value well researched articles that balance deep insight with compelling anecdotes.

Topics of particular interest to us are:

– Natural History: A fresh perspective is essential on these very broad and well documented subjects.

 – Traditional and/or contemporary culture and subculture: Including the themes of traditional lifestyle in a modern world; the impact of commerce and conservation on traditional lifestyle and visa versa.

– Pioneering and expeditionary travel: Unique, groundbreaking adventures that have real purpose and go beyond the boundaries of traditional travel.

 – Conservation: Innovations in land use and the balance of conservation, commerce, culture and community would be of particular interest.

Article Submissions

We do not commission articles but will gladly consider your original, unpublished manuscripts and provide feedback.

Writing style

Africa Geographic magazine values a confident voice that is curious and vibrant. Articles should be well researched and provide unique insights that will educate and inspire readers.

Submission format

A “Word” file is ideal. If you have accompanying images, please do not insert them in the email, rather send a link to an online portfolio or a Dropbox (Please do not send an invite to a shared Dropbox folder).

Article Length

There is no prescribed length, but in this internet age we encourage brevity and believe in the impact of fewer, well chosen words. Less is more.

Photography

Africa Geographic magazine strives to be the showpiece for African photography. To achieve this, the imagery we display must be of the very highest standards in execution as well as compelling and unique in theme. We want people to see it here first and return to the magazine regularly to absorb the imagery. Being an environmentally and socially conscious magazine, we place the highest value on integrity in the methods used to photograph the subjects and edit the images.

Supporting imagery for feature articles

Imagery should not only support the narrative but enhance it considerably. Feature article submissions should comprise at least 2 key images that capture the essence of the story with 8- 10 more images forming the narrative. The range of photos should be multi-faceted with a variety of perspectives and compositions.

Photographic portfolios and essays

We feature individual portfolios and essays in the magazine. To be featured here, unique, compelling themes are a must. For example: an in depth series on the special bond Samburu tribesmen form with their cattle. We welcome photography highlighting all aspects of African life be it wildlife, urban life, ancient culture, architecture and so on.

Photo submission format

Please do not send images directly by mail. A link to an online portfolio or a Dropbox link is best (please do not send an invite to a shared Dropbox folder).

Revert

We greatly value your contributions and will respond as soon as possible. If you have not heard back from us within 2 weeks it simply means we are busy in which case please chase us up.
